15. The governor’s plan

“A rebel hideout in the heart of the mountains?” the governor shouted, getting up from his desk.

“Yes, my lord,” Vark told him.

The governor swallowed. “Do they really live alongside those beasts?”

“Yes, my lord,” Vark repeated, contemplating the mountain range visible from the window behind him. “I’ve seen them up close. Well, one of them. A dragon with scales like amber, talking in a friendly manner with the people there. When they saw us, me riding my own dragon, they greeted us as part of them.”

“Did they bow to your dragon? Make offers?”

Vark laughed internally. People still believed dragons were treated as gods before the arrival of the Krisaders.

“No, my lord. We’ve always been wrong about them. They’re not gods to them; they’re considered to be just like us. Which is even more ridiculous, isn’t it?”

“Ridiculous indeed. I still find myself thinking about when two of them burned down the village of Rimerk. The disaster I had to witness when the news came...”

The governor had a fist on his wooden desk and was watching his spy keenly. “Anyway. I need some moments to reflect. What you have reported to me is nothing I have ever heard of—I’d say nobody has.”

“Don’t you believe my word?”

The governor’s eyebrows curved slightly.

“You can be sure, dear Vark, that if anyone else dared challenge me in such a way, I would call my guards to put that man in chains. Luckily for you, you are a very precious element for this colony’s safety.”

“So, what will your sentence be?” He wasn’t asking seriously. Of course, the governor’s answer would be positive. He may be the governor and such, but it wasn’t wise to go against a man with the power to tame a dragon. It was a funny relationship, the one they had, made of trust and a bit of fear. The latter, however, had slowly almost faded out after Vark had repeatedly proven his loyalty, but what remained of it always turned useful to achieve his goals.

Thank the gods, he had convinced that stupid lizard of his to leave that valley at the last moment. Who knows what would have happened if she had met her disgraced brother there...but it all ended well, and now he had in his hands the biggest discovery he had made in a long time. The rebels would soon be delivered to the kingdom’s justice, together with their treacherous refugee. But first, he had to wait for what the governor had to say, just as a formality.

“My sentence is that I trust you, Vark, like I always have.”

Vark smiled, satisfied.

“However...”

However? What else needed to be said? There was an illegal settlement in the mountains that hosted an assassin and bonded with the beasts the kingdom fought against! Did he want more proof of it? How could he do it without taking him directly there? Not that it would be difficult...

“I advise you not to expect me to send a whole troop there. I believe what you said, but
